Sarah Swords

South West (Wessex)

“I am a writer, director, producer and photographer based between Frome and Bath in Somerset. I have always been a self-employed freelancer, starting in the production department as a production manager in the independent sector for the BFI, Channel 4 and BBC. I was an active member of ACTT (Production Committee) under the great Alan Sapper.

I was project manager on many Derek Jarman films and indeed it was he who started me writing over 20 years ago.

I have written drama and documentary for film, TV and radio, including King Kong – The Township Jazz Musical, which was voted BBC Radio’s Pick of the Week and Pick of the Year; TV drama Gut; and feature film Between Earth and Sky. I am presently in development hell on a number of projects.

Having been a long-time member of WGGB, I am thrilled to now represent the Wessex region. There is much happening here, from new university writing courses, theatre schools, Channel 4, BBC, Creative England and Bottle Yard Studios, which I hope will engender more memberships. But I am proud to be able to be of service to our current members in the region and will organise some events to get us together at various locations.

The Writers’ Guild has always been there for me – a kind, compassionate group who have always had my back when I have needed it. It is a vital part of our industry in promoting equality, diversity, regional representation and fairness. I’m honoured to be a part of it.”
