We are a member-led, democratic organisation and member activism is at the heart of our union. Our members value being part of a vibrant community of fellow writers who work collectively to achieve change for the benefit of all UK writers

Our Executive Council is made up of elected volunteer members who chair our national, regional, craft and equality and diversity committees.

The Executive Council meets regularly to vote on and set strategy for the union, while individual committees are involved in hands-on activity such as networking events, negotiations and campaigns.

Our Annual General Meeting takes place once a year and is open to our entire membership – members can propose and vote on motions to set the direction of their union.

Each year we produce an annual report which features the activity of our individual reps (view the 2023-24 annual report here. Plus a large-print version here).

We are also affiliated to the Trades Union Congress, which brings together more than 5.5 million working people who are part of 48 member unions.

You can find our Rule Book – by which we are governed – here.
