Today saw the long-awaited announcement of the Government’s Freelance Champions for the creative industries, something that WGGB has been calling for over the past two years.
According to the announcement from the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport, Leila D’Aronville and Lizzie Crump have been jointly appointed as Freelance Champions, to put the sector’s 703,000 freelancers at the heart of Government policy-making, and to sit on the Creative Industries Council.
WGGB General Secretary Ellie Peers said: “As our members well know, freelance writers are at the heart of our world-leading creative industries, yet their unique needs and interests are too often overlooked, and the challenges they face are becoming ever more acute by the day.
“It is vital that Government takes urgent action around fair pay and fair treatment, to ensure the sector is sustainable and, crucially, on copyright and AI.
“We look forward to working with both Leila D’Aronville and Lizzie Crump in their new roles to collectively represent our members’ interests in these and other areas.”
