In 2018 WGGB launched a landmark report which showed that only 16% of working film writers in the UK were women, and only 14% of prime-time TV was written by women

These were just two of the shocking findings revealed in the report Gender Inequality and Screenwriters, which was commissioned by WGGB, funded by the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) and authored by Alexis Kreager with Stephen Follows.

The report spanned a whole decade and showed that TV shows and films written by women in the UK flatlined during that period, with no consistent improvement in gender representation (read a summary plus view the full report here).

WGGB’s Equality Writes campaign was our response – it gained the support of high-profile writers, many of our members and other supporters in the industry and beyond. It opened up conversations with broadcasters and commissioners who committed to change, and led to the establishment of a new WGGB Equality and Diversity Committee, whose work continues in this and other areas.
