Alica Arvay

Alica Árvay was born in the kind of town where you could wake up Slovak on Monday and Hungarian on Tuesday without moving an inch. If there was ever someone who understood that everything is a matter of perspective, she is the one: trained early as a true combattante de brousse in a region where identity itself was an extreme sport.

Komárno/Komárom — the Danube’s double city — sits in the same cultural neighbourhood as Kundera, Hrabal, Esterházy, Krasznahorkai and Mrożek, where humour is not decoration but survival. Growing up among people who spoke three or four languages as naturally as breathing itself, Alica learned early that history has a mischievous sense of humour and that borders behave like weather fronts.

Today she lives in Sevenoaks, where borders stay put and the ghosts are literary: John Donne, Vita Sackville‑West, Virginia Woolf. Here she writes, works, and occasionally laughs at the improbable trajectory that brought her from a phoenix‑city to a place where stability is finally possible.

She has published two books, contributed to three anthologies, translated three books, and continues to write with the same stubborn optimism she inherited from her region. She stands on the clouds, and somehow keeps her balance.
