Student membership

Your writing career starts here

We understand how tough it is starting out as a writer. As the trade union for writers, we’ve been fighting for writers’ rights for over 60 years, to ensure writers are properly paid and protected.

We believe that writers should be supported at every stage of their careers, which is why we’re launching a special membership package for students.

Join as a student member for just £30 a year (compared with £198 for full membership) and:

  • Become part of a community of writers in TV, film, radio, theatre, videogames, comedy and books.
  • Enjoy special benefits (film screenings, free business skills training, networking, jobs and competition alerts, discounted theatre tickets and other industry offers).
  • Campaign to secure better pay and working conditions.
  • Be treated seriously as a writer.

Don’t just listen to us though. Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight says:

“When a writer sets out on their career, they need a community of interest to help them negotiate the creative world. The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain was established to stand up for the rights of writers. The WGGB is your friend in the business”.

You can find out what other WGGB members value about their membership here and read more about our recent campaigns and other wins for writers.

To be eligible for student membership you need to be 18 years of age or over, studying for a course at BA level or below and have never previously been a member of WGGB. Payment is by a one-off annual payment of £30 (debit/credit card or PayPal) and you can join online.

Students who don’t meet these criteria can join as a Candidate Member for just £9 per month or £108 per year.
