(** Taken from Inheritance in Waiting (2019), an original Israeli comedy whose English version I was commissioned to write and adapt)

INT. LIFT - DAY

An office building lift. The family, still in their funeral attire, are all crammed together inside the lift. Standing in the middle are the sad sister trio - Hannah, Tzilla, and Malka'le.

MALKA'LE

What's the big rush? Right after the bloody funeral...

TZILLA

Why don't you ask your mother...

HANNAH

Ma's dead.

BEAT

TZILLA

What is that smell? What perfume are you wearing?

HANNAH

What's that supposed to mean? You saying you don't like it?

TZILLA

At what point did I say I didn't like it?

INT. SOLICITORS' OFFICE - DAY

A posh office boasting mahogany wood furniture and a massive library. Behind a large desk, we find Alon Garbuz, Esq., wearing his reading glasses and holding a stack of papers. Next to him is his brother, Yair Garbuz, Esq. He produces a bunch of documents from inside an old folder.

Across the table, as if taken straight out of a family tableau, is the whole family. There is chaos in the room.

ALON GARBUZ

Quiet!

The family goes silent.

ALON GARBUZ

We can't carry on like this...

YAIR GARBUZ

Can't even hear myself think.

ALON GARBUZ

Now, what was the question? Hands raised, pleased.

Malka'le plucks up the courage and raises a hand.

MALKA'LE

And what if we don't? What if we don't go?

ALON GARBUZ

What if you don't go? Well, if you don't go on this trip then your mother's written instructions state that the inheritance be frozen, in full, for a period of one hundred years...

YaIR GARBUZ

(Finishing his brother's sentence)

Meaning only your children's children's children would be eligible to claim it.

TZILLA

Hang on, Garbuz... What do you mean 'written instructions'? When did Ma write any of this? She could have been whacked out on her meds...

YAIR GARBUZ

Your mother was a woman of sound body and mind...

HANNAH

Tell me... all this... This is all legal, is it?

AlON GARBUZ

It is legal because it's what your mother wanted...

HANNAH

Honestly... What did we ever lose in Poland?

Quiet all around.

YEHUDA

(Whispers to Gideon)

Your whole family for starters...

HANNAH

Tzilla, could you tell Yemeni Cricket over there to zip it?

Gideon pulls Yehuda into a tight embrace.

YEHUDA

(Whispers at him)

It's actually Adenite...

TZILLA

It's Adenite Cricket!

HANNAH

Whatever...

TZILLA

You know, Hannah, Ma might have some property over there.

HANNAH

Property my foot. She was born in a shithole; her father was this loser hanger-on... she barely made it out of the camps with a pair of shoes to her name... now, suddenly you're all interested in the inheritance?

TZILLA

Nachum, would you calm your wife down please?

HANNAH

Don't you 'Nachum' me!

YAIR GARBUZ

The inheritance is a moot point. Yes, it is a handsome one; more than enough to go around.

ALON GARBUZ

Quite... the flat on the Rembrandt Rd., and the Ben-Zion Blvd building alone...

YAIR GARBUZ

Not now, none of this is relevant... first, you all sit Shiva. In Poland. That means all of you. Per the instructions. Garbuz out.

ALON GARBUZ

Your flight takes off at 5.30. Your guide will meet you with your tour bus at arrivals. He's been brought up to speed and has the itinerary for every day of your stay, just as your mother had planned...

MALKA'LE

Guide? There's a guide? Who's the guide?

TZILLA

Huh?

HANNAH

Who?

YAIR GARBUZ

Enough with all the--

(In Yiddish)

Pointless questions!

MALKA'LE

I was only asking who the guide was.

ALON GARBUZ

Garbuz, what's the guide's name?

Garbuz opens a folder and checks the contents, then another one.

YAIR GARBUZ

Oh yeah, that information's classified.

MALKA'LE

If it's classified then I'm not going.

Garbuz slams the folder shut.

AlON GARBUZ

Then you don't get your inheritance.

AYELET

There is an inheritance, Malka'le! There is going to be one! It's all in your head.

GIDEON

What's all in her head?

AYELET

Later, Gideon.

Ayelet takes a blood pressure monitor out of her purse and starts pumping it.

TZILLA

I actually heard some pretty nice things about Poland. They have hot springs, bathhouses, lovely views...

HANNAH

Bathhouses... more like slaughterhouses.

TZILLA

And? What's your point? It's a heritage trip. A lot of folks doing that these days.

HANNAH

You do it then. And leave us out of it.

TZILLA

(In Yiddish)

Heaven forbid you stop your moaning.

Tzilla brazenly takes Jonathan's hand.

JONATHAN

Now in Hebrew?

TZILLA

Read the subtitles.

Jonathan nods.

AYELET

Mum, that's enough. My blood pressure's already through the roof. You two should spend the week together.

MALKA'LE

Lord help us all.

YaIR GARBUZ

Oh yeah. And according to this, there's someone else you should be inviting.

YeHUDA

(Whispers to Gideon)

Can I come too?
