There are important changes coming to the tax system from April 2026 which have implications for self-employed writers.

The changes include new requirements for digital record keeping, plus an increase in the amount of submissions required per year.

The most important point to note is that the changes are being introduced gradually and if your total turnover (in 2024/25) is above £50,000, then you must sign up for MTD from April 2026.

WGGB has run two free online workshops on Making Tax Digital for our members. Ajay Jassal and Andy Levett of Chartered accountancy firm HW Fisher led members through the detail of the changes and members can access the PowerPoint presentation from the workshop hosted by HW Fisher in the Members’ Area of our website.

The PowerPoint includes the new schedule of deadlines for submissions from 2026, how to sign up to MTD, a list of MTD-compliant software, the circumstances under which you can leave MTD, and much more.

HW Fisher also offers WGGB members an initial, free one-hour consultation to discuss their tax and accounting affairs. You can find out how to access this via the Members’ Area of our website.
