People's Assembly Anti-Austerity march June 2015

We came, we saw, we marched

By Lisa Holdsworth

WGGB members were out in force on the People’s Assembly Against Austerity End Austerity Now national march in London on Saturday 20 June 2015. Carrying the official Guild banner were Jamie Rhodes and Piers Beckley (above), who deserve a medal for services to sore shoulders and feet.

They marched alongside the ‘Writers’ Bloc: The Pen Is Mightier Than The Axe’ banner, which was carried by myself and other WGGB members Maggie Innes and Alice Nutter.

Various WGGB members joined us along the way and we think we may even have recruited a few new ones.

We made it all the way to Parliament Square, despite being unfit writers who rarely leave our desks, and were very proud of that achievement. However, our real source of pride was being part of a 250,000-strong march that left no one in any doubt that this Government’s pig-headed commitment to a damaging programme of cuts cannot endure or be tolerated.
