A new government and UK writers

Following the Labour landslide and the election of a new Government on 5 July, we issued a statement from our General Secretary Ellie Peers.

Ellie Peers has also written to the following new Secretaries of State and Government ministers:

  • Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
  • Chris Bryant MP, Minister of State in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
  • Peter Kyle MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology
  • Jonathan Reynolds MP, Secretary of State for Business and Trade

We have shared our Manifesto Putting writers at the heart of the story with them, and look forward to meeting and working with them. We believe the new Government must protect, support and nurture UK writers by introducing protections on fair pay and fair treatment, ensure our creative industries are sustainable and introduce robust protections on copyright, particularly in the wake of developments in AI.

We will also be drawing up detailed briefing papers for policymakers.

Thanks to all our members who shared our manifesto with their parliamentary candidates in the run-up to the General Election. We are aware that many of you now have new MPs, so please do share our manifesto with them (you can find out who your MP is and write to them via this website), or you could share with your MP on X/Twitter. Do tag @TheWritersGuild (and you can use some of our social media graphics – which outline our manifesto headlines).

If you’d like to get involved in our future campaigns or get more active in your union, please drop a line to john@writersguild.org.uk.
