“The newly formed Comedy Committee is planning to represent comedy writers at every level within our profession. Having one vocational group makes more sense than farming out different issues across the other committees. My own career is a not untypical example of why this makes sense. I spent the first 10 years as a stand-up before moving into writing full-time for the next 10 years or so, during which time I was writing for TV and radio: panel shows, sketch shows, sitcoms, gag writing for presenters and so on. And I have spent a good deal of the last 10 years writing song lyrics for radio and TV shows, and developing new live shows.
“I’ve been a member of Radio and TV Committees in the past, fighting odd battles and winning occasional victories, but this feels like a great opportunity to help comedy writers throughout their careers, and to hopefully give our writers a much-needed voice across the industry.”
