Our history

On 13 May 1959, a group of writers met in a basement in Harley Street to form the Television and Screenwriters’ Guild – later to be renamed the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. Six decades on, WGGB is a thriving union, with an impressive number of wins under its belt, as you will see in this section

The Write Stuff

In 2009, to celebrate our 50th birthday, we commissioned author Nick Yapp to write the history of the Writers’ Guild, The Write Stuff. To mark our Diamond anniversary we have published it as a flipbook and Nick has also written the next chapter of our history, covering the decade that followed. In this section you can also view a timeline of key events from our history, as well as our pick of the best WGGB quotes over the past six decades.
