NPCS open for applications

Our New Play Commission Scheme (NPCS) is now accepting applications. Led by WGGB in partnership with HighTide Theatre, UK Theatre and the Independent Theatre Council, it is designed to respond to the decline in new theatre commissions during the Covid-19 pandemic, and will ensure 15 new commissions for playwrights across England in 2022

Playwrights are required to apply with a venue or producer and applications close on 24 June 2022.

To apply, visit the NPCS website application portal which has FAQs and information about eligibility and the application process, plus the online form.

It also has information on how to apply for one of the NPCS awards for writers from under-represented writing groups, plus there is an accessibility section featuring large-print documents and other support.

To help support writers in their application we run a free online event on Thursday 26 May 2022. It featured former WGGB President, acclaimed playwright and architect of the scheme David Edgar, WGGB Deputy General Secretary Lesley Gannon and members of our West Midlands branch who organised the event. It covered:

  • How and why the New Play Commission Scheme came about
  • Who it’s designed for
  • How you can apply
  • A chance to ask questions about the current state of theatre and the commissioning of new playwriting in general

The video of the event will be available on our YouTube channel.
