Delyth George: 1960-2019

By William Gwyn

Delyth GeorgeIt is with great sadness that we note the death of Delyth George (pictured), a faithful member of the WGGB Wales Committee. Originally from the Gwendraeth Valley, Delyth was educated at Aberystwyth University where she gained a PhD for her thesis on love and romance in the Welsh novel.

Delyth worked for many years in the publishing world as an editor for the University of Wales Press and then for the Welsh Books Council. She was also a creative editor on many books. She published several novels and contributed to long-running Welsh language television series such as Pobol y Cwm and Y Palmant Aur as a storyliner and scriptwriter.

Delyth had a wide range of interests and was very supportive of Wales’s cultural life. She was also very good company at the bar after our committee meetings.

She will leave a large gap on the Wales Committee and her many friends will miss her dearly.

Gyda thristwch mawr bu farw Delyth George, aelod cyson o Bwyllgor Cymru o’r Undeb.  Yn wreiddiol o Cwm Gwendraeth, cafodd ei haddysgu ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth ble cwblhaodd draethawd PhD ar “serch a rhamant yn y nofel Gymraeg”.  Bu’n gweithio yn y byd cyhoeddi fel Golygydd i Wasg Prifysgol Cymru ac yna i’r Cyngor Llyfrau Cymraeg.  Gwnaeth gyfraniad hefyd fel Golygydd Creadigol ar nifer o lyfrau.  Cyhoeddodd sawl nofel ynghyd â chyfrannu i gyfresi teledu megis Pobol y Cwm a Y Palmant Aur fel storiwraig a sgriptwraig.  ‘Roedd hi’n berson eang ei diddordebau ac yn gefnogol i’r byd diwylliannol yng Nghymru.  Roedd hi hefyd yn gwmni difyr yn y bar wedi pwyllgor!  Bydd bwlch mawr iawn ar ei hôl a byddwn fel pwyllgor a chyfeillion yn gweld ei hangen hi.
